Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, and Tony-winner Cole Escola are collaborating on a new film project centered around Miss Piggy, the beloved Muppets character. The movie is currently in early development at Disney, which holds the rights to the Muppets franchise.
Miss Piggy, known for her diva personality since her debut on Jim Henson’s “The Muppet Show” in the 1970s, has never been featured in a standalone film. Lawrence and Stone will take on producer roles, while Escola is set to write the screenplay.
“I don’t know if I can announce this but I am just going to … Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it,” Lawrence revealed on the podcast Las Culturistas, hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers.
When the hosts asked if Lawrence and Stone would star alongside each other, Lawrence teased, “I think so. We have to… It’s fucked up [that we haven’t done a movie together].”
Lawrence shared more about the film’s origin during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. She explained that Stone came up with the concept during the pandemic lockdown and the peak of cancel culture discussions.
“She said, ‘Miss Piggy is a feminist icon. It would be so funny if Miss Piggy got canceled,'” Lawrence recalled. “Now that is not the plot necessarily, but it got the wheels turning.”
The collaboration between Lawrence, Stone, and Escola aims to bring a fresh, comedic perspective to the iconic character of Miss Piggy, blending star power with a timely cultural idea.
Author's summary: Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, and Cole Escola are developing a unique Miss Piggy film, combining comedy and cultural themes with Disney’s Muppets legacy.
