Before the new Big Brother Australia housemates were selected, TV WEEK had an exclusive chance to peek behind the curtain of the casting process. When Channel 10 announced the show’s comeback — restored to its classic format — excitement spread quickly.
The iconic Big Brother house has returned to the Gold Coast, featuring live nominations, evictions, and a 24-hour livestream. According to Executive Network Producer Sarah Thornton, this revival aims to capture the spirit of the original series rather than chasing influencer fame.
“We’re not looking to fill the house with influencers,” said Sarah Thornton. “Our goal is to bring together people from every background, age, and lifestyle, just like we did in the first seasons.”
Sarah invited me to sit in on one of the casting sessions held nationwide. On a typical Tuesday afternoon in a modest Sydney hotel, I joined five executives, including Sarah, in a simple conference room. As each candidate entered, they faced a mix of playful and personal questions.
Some participants offered brief, hesitant replies that cut their time short — the quickest lasting just three minutes. Others stood out by winning the panel over with genuine energy, charisma, or humor.
“Seeing up to 60 people a day can be exhausting,” Sarah admitted. “But it can also be magical. I love how generous people are.”
The Big Brother Australia casting process focuses on discovering authentic personalities from diverse walks of life, keeping the show true to its original social experiment roots.
