Graeme McDowell, a LIV Golf player and former European Ryder Cup vice captain, has expressed interest in becoming the captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup in Ireland. With the 2025 event at Bethpage Black concluded, focus has shifted to who will lead the teams in 2027.
McDowell said he is “putting [his] hat in the ring” should two-time winning captain Luke Donald decline a third captaincy. At 46 years old, McDowell believes he is at an ideal age to captain the team—neither too young nor too old. His Northern Irish roots could also make him a popular choice for the Ireland-based event at Adare Manor.
“I’d love to do it,” McDowell told bunkered, citing practical reasons he would be a strong candidate.
However, McDowell expressed concerns that the ongoing tensions between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour could hinder his chances. He criticized the “best players in the world” for contributing to golf’s current divisiveness, complicating prospects for cooperation and team unity.
Graeme McDowell is eager to captain the 2027 Ryder Cup but fears LIV-PGA disputes may block his path, despite his strong credentials and experience.
