Paris: The New Switzerland

At the Asia Society France Summer Summit, Wharton alumni and global leaders explored Paris’s evolving role in geopolitics. The city is emerging as a neutral ground where the world’s power centers — the United States, China, and the European Union — can meet and debate ideas without political spectacle.

Paris as the New Neutral Space

In Liu Cixin’s novel The Three-Body Problem, survival depends on navigating three competing forces. Today, international politics faces a similar triad of tension among the United States, China, and the EU. Unable to dominate through military or economic strength alone, Europe — and particularly Paris — now positions itself as a facilitator for dialogue and understanding.

“We designed Paris as a place to transcend binaries — beyond ‘hawk’ or ‘dove,’ beyond capital-to-capital talking points. China’s decisions now shape supply chains, tech standards, and climate outcomes worldwide. You need a room where that complexity can be explored with rigor — and without theatrics.”

This statement by Duncan Clark, founding trustee and co-chair of Asia Society France, highlighted Paris’s mission to create an environment where nuanced global discussions can unfold with depth and mutual respect.

Global Implications

Author’s Summary: Paris is redefining its global role as a neutral stage where major powers navigate complex geopolitical realities through informed, balanced dialogue.
