David Harbour Reflects on the End of 'Stranger Things', Life Lessons, and the Next Step

Before saying goodbye to the hit Netflix show, David Harbour walked the streets of New York with Esquire Spain. A version of this article was published in the November 2025 issue of Esquire Spain magazine.

On November 26, Netflix’s Stranger Things will begin its long-awaited three-part farewell. Thanksgiving Day will bring the first four episodes of season eight, with another three dropping on Christmas Day. The finale, marking the end of the streaming platform’s most successful original series, will air on New Year’s Eve.

This will conclude a decade-long journey for Harbour, who gained international fame portraying Hawkins, Indiana's police chief Jim Hopper. Given the anticipation from fans, the latter half of 2025 was expected to attract significant media attention. However, the surprise release of a new album last week greatly increased the spotlight on Harbour.

In September, before the pop-based drama began, Esquire Spain's Rafael Sánchez Casademont met with Harbour to discuss his career, the bittersweet end of Stranger Things, and his future plans. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.

What makes New York City special to you?

"When I was a kid it was this magical place. I grew up about an hour outside the city, in a suburban town in Westchester."

Harbour's reflections reveal the deep personal connection he has with the city, which continues to inspire him as he faces the next chapter of his career.

Author’s summary: David Harbour shares insights on ending a decade-long role as Jim Hopper in Stranger Things, reflecting on his connection to New York and upcoming ventures.
