Representative Jasmine Crockett, a Texas Democrat, stated she is seriously considering running for the U.S. Senate in Texas. Recent polls suggest she would likely be the leading contender in the Democratic primary.
“Seriously weighing” a Senate run in the Lone Star State.
Newsweek contacted Crockett’s campaign and congressional office via email for comment. The upcoming Senate elections present significant challenges for Democrats, who must target conservative states like Texas if they hope to secure a majority. Currently, Republicans hold a 53–47 advantage in the Senate.
Democrats view GOP-held seats in Maine—where former Vice President Kamala Harris won by about seven points—and North Carolina—where President Donald Trump prevailed by roughly three points—as their best opportunities to gain ground. However, few Republican-held seats are up for reelection in states that Harris carried or where Trump won narrowly, leaving Texas among the few viable battlegrounds.
If Crockett enters the race, her candidacy would reshape the Democratic primary, which already includes several well-known figures. First elected to the U.S. House in 2022, Crockett has gained national recognition for her outspoken criticism of President Donald Trump and other Republican leaders.
Kamala Harris described Crockett as “authentic” when speaking about the Democratic Party’s future leadership.
Representative Jasmine Crockett is considering a Senate bid in Texas, potentially turning a Republican stronghold into a key battleground for Democrats in the next election.
