A full-scale reproduction of the iconic Spitfire will serve as a powerful symbol of courage and sacrifice during this year’s Remembrance Sunday in Durham City.
The hand-built Spitfire MK IX, created by Simply Spitfire, will be exhibited in Millennium Place on Sunday, 9 November, from 9:00am to 2:00pm.
As 2025 commemorates both the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, special efforts have been made locally to honor these milestones.
Cllr Andrew Harrison, the council’s Armed Forces Champion, expressed his wish “to do something memorable to mark these significant anniversaries.”
With the collaboration of Squadron Leader (Retired) James A. Cowan MBE and the team at Simply Spitfire, the city secured this remarkable aircraft as a meaningful tribute to all who have served.
The Spitfire will form part of the Durham City Remembrance Parade route, which runs from 10:00am to noon the same morning, offering residents and visitors a chance to reflect on the legacy of service members past and present.
