Dr Hilary Jones, a regular guest on Lorraine Kelly’s show, revealed an incident where he appeared on air while intoxicated and later apologised to the show’s management.
The 72-year-old doctor, known for his expert health advice, reflected on his early appearances on the programme. After running the New York Marathon, he met two of his brothers to celebrate. Having not eaten and consumed a lot of beer, he was scheduled for a live segment from a remote studio in Times Square with Lorraine.
Dr Hilary said the live broadcast started unexpectedly while he was still getting used to the remote camera setup.
"All I remember was giggling and laughing and talking rubbish because I was actually a bit drunk. Afterwards I thought, ‘They’re going to sack me, I’ve made a big faux pas. What did I say?'"
Worried about his professionalism, Dr Hilary called the show’s bosses the next day to apologise for his behaviour.
“I phoned them and said, 'I’m really sorry' and they said, ‘Why? You sounded brilliant, you just sounded happy! You sounded euphoric and it was really energetic and lovely.’ So, I got away with it."
Dr Hilary’s candid story highlights how even experienced professionals can have unplanned moments on live TV, but his lighthearted approach helped maintain his role on the show.
