Jimmy Kimmel has launched a food bank outside his Los Angeles studio, titled The Jimmy Kimmel Live Big, Beautiful Food Bank, as a response to the hardships caused by the ongoing government shutdown. This initiative aims to support Americans struggling to feed their families during this difficult period.
The food bank provides essential pantry staples to help those affected, especially the 42 million Americans who depend on SNAP benefits for groceries. The shutdown, lasting over a month, has delayed SNAP payments, leaving many without necessary food assistance.
A federal judge in Rhode Island recently ordered the Trump administration to allocate funds to fully cover SNAP benefits for November. Previously, President Trump suggested the program might receive no funding, a claim that was later retracted by the White House, which promised to fund 65% of the maximum benefit.
"Trump had earlier implied he would not fund the program at all, a statement which was quickly walked-back by the White House and replaced with a vow to cover 65 percent of the maximum benefit."
Cities and nonprofit organizations have urged the federal government for increased contributions as the crisis continues.
