I'd not used my PlayStation Portal in a year, but now Sony's new update has arrived I can't put it down

PlayStation Portal Reborn with Major Cloud Gaming Update

The latest update for the PlayStation Portal has breathed new life into Sony’s handheld device. When I first reviewed the Portal two years ago, I admired its promise and even commented:

"If it had access to cloud gaming too, it’d be better still."

It took some time, but Sony has now made this vision a reality, fundamentally transforming the handheld experience. Previously, cloud gaming was limited to a small beta and only a few select titles. Now, with the largest update since its launch, the Portal allows players to enjoy hundreds of games directly over the cloud without needing to connect to a PS5 or PS5 Pro.

Cloud Access and Performance

From my testing, streaming is impressively smooth, with minimal lag. The update removes the beta tag from Sony's cloud gaming program and significantly expands it. You can now stream a major portion of your own purchased games, and Sony claims that more than a thousand titles are currently supported.

The New "Your Library" Section

A new “Your Library” section now neatly organizes available titles. Simply click or tap one of them, and after a short load time, it’s ready to play. As someone with a broad collection of PS5 and classic games, I found almost all of mine present and playable.

Rediscovering Forgotten Games

After updating my Portal, I instantly gained access to over a hundred titles—some of which I’d owned for years and nearly forgotten. This update not only enhances accessibility but also rekindles the joy of rediscovering older favorites.

Author’s summary: Sony’s major update transforms the PlayStation Portal with full cloud gaming, fast streaming, and an expanded library, turning it into a truly standalone handheld device.
