Cloud streaming officially launches on the PlayStation Portal later today, allowing players to enjoy games on the handheld without linking it to a PlayStation 5. This update comes two years after the device’s initial release and one year after its beta phase.
Owners will still need a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription to access cloud gaming, but the newest system update moves the Portal closer to being a true successor to the PSP. The announcement came from the official PlayStation blog, confirming that cloud streaming will roll out to all eligible subscribers soon, following nearly a year of testing.
With this change, the PS Portal can now operate independently from a console, requiring no extra setup. It’s a significant upgrade for a handheld that was previously criticized for limited features and dependence on the PS5.
When the PlayStation Portal debuted in 2023, many gamers were disappointed by its reliance on remote play through a PS5 — a feature already available on smartphones and other devices. This limitation made it feel more like an accessory than a standalone system. The latest update, however, finally gives the handheld its own identity.
“It’s a breath of fresh air for the Portal, which, when it launched back in 2023, garnered negative reviews for its limited power and portability.”
The PlayStation Portal now supports cloud gaming, freeing it from console dependence and marking Sony’s handheld comeback toward true gaming portability.
