During his first-ever visit to Miami on November 2, Ethan Hawke reflected on his career while accepting the Miami Film Festival’s Variety Virtuoso Award. In a conversation with Variety co–editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh, he shared stories from decades in Hollywood and expressed admiration for Taylor Swift.
Hawke spoke with enthusiasm about reuniting with his Dead Poet’s Society co-star Josh Charles for Swift’s Fortnight music video featuring Post Malone. The project, written and directed by Swift, came to life through his daughter, Maya Hawke.
“My daughter is creating opportunities in my life. I get a text from my daughter saying ‘Hey dad, Taylor Swift wants your number.’ So I guess they met. And anyway, Taylor Swift is a ‘Dead Poet’s Society’ fan, and so, hell, I’ll take what I can get,”
Hawke recounted with humor how Maya’s connection led to his involvement in the video, highlighting how their family ties now blend into artistic collaboration.
“That woman is incredible. She’s a force of nature.”
The actor complimented Swift’s creativity and leadership, saying she brought energy and precision to the set. His praise arrived as Swift continues to make headlines with her latest release, a new version of her chart-topping hit from The Life of a Showgirl.
