Seven individuals were briefly hospitalized after a suspicious package containing white powder was opened at Joint Base Andrews, a military facility near Washington that houses Air Force One. Media outlets reported the incident on Thursday.
According to CNN, initial testing by a HAZMAT team found no hazardous substances, though an investigation remains ongoing. Those hospitalized were later discharged. Fox News noted that some affected individuals had complained of headaches.
“Joint Base Andrews responded to an incident here today after an individual opened a suspicious package,” the base said in a statement. “As a precaution, the building and connecting building were evacuated. Joint Base Andrews first responders determined there were no immediate threats and turned the scene over to the Office of Special Investigations.”
CNN, citing sources familiar with the probe, reported that the package also included materials described as political propaganda.
Joint Base Andrews, located in Maryland just outside Washington, is used by senior US government officials and serves as the home base for the presidential jet, Air Force One.
