Many films have tried to capture the success of Jaws over the decades, but few have reached the same level of fame as the 1999 shark movie Deep Blue Sea, which recently became available for streaming.
There is no doubt that Jaws is the original shark movie classic. Steven Spielberg’s 1975 summer blockbuster launched the shark horror subgenre that continues to thrive today.
Directed by Renny Harlin, Deep Blue Sea began streaming on Tubi on November 1st. Initially, it was criticized for its cheesy tone, clichéd script, and illogical plot. The story takes place in an isolated underwater research facility where scientists, working on an Alzheimer’s cure, find themselves battling three intelligent, genetically engineered mako sharks.
"Deep Blue Sea is far from the cinematic masterpiece that Jaws is, and it isn’t likely to go down as one of the top shark movies of all time, but it doesn’t deserve the bad rep that’s haunted it all of these years."
At its core, Deep Blue Sea is a dumb but entertaining monster movie full of memorable scenes and over-the-top moments. It succeeds primarily as a fun, well-crafted film aimed at entertaining its audience.
"Deep Blue Sea is a film whose primary goal is to entertain, and to that degree, it succeeds exceptionally well."
Deep Blue Sea may not rival Jaws, but it deserves recognition as a highly entertaining shark thriller with iconic moments that have earned a loyal following.
