AZ suffered a 3-1 defeat against Crystal Palace, the English Premier League side, on Thursday evening at Selhorst Park during the UEFA Conference League match.
Crystal Palace, winners of the English FA Cup, controlled much of the game. Their first chance came in the 11th minute when a long ball was headed back into the box by Chris Richards. Ismaila Sarr received it on his chest, but his volley struck the goalpost.
Minutes later, Palace was awarded a penalty after a through ball from Yeremy Pino found Sarr, who was fouled by Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro.
Jean-Philippe Mateta, known for his strong penalty record, had his shot saved by Owusu-Oduro.
Following the missed penalty, Crystal Palace increased pressure on AZ’s defense. Owusu-Oduro saved a header from Sarr, and shortly after, Will Hughes’ volley hit the crossbar.
This sustained pressure led to Palace’s first goal. A long ball was nodded down by Sarr to center back Maxine Lacroix, who volleyed the ball low into the corner.
AZ tested Crystal Palace’s keeper Dean Henderson late in the first half. Sven Mijnans took a solid shot from outside the area, which Henderson tipped away.
Palace then extended their lead shortly before halftime, solidifying their advantage.
The home side’s dominance was evident throughout, with AZ struggling to create significant threats.
Author’s Summary: Crystal Palace dominated AZ with tactical pressure and effective finishing, securing a clear 3-1 victory in the UEFA Conference League clash.
