England’s chief nurse has urged people to get vaccinated now, with the peak of the flu season only weeks away. Adults eligible for the flu vaccine are being encouraged to come forward to ensure full protection ahead of the winter months.
To meet demand, the NHS is releasing 2.4 million vaccination slots next week—enough to immunize the entire population of Greater Manchester or Botswana. This move is aimed at combating an early rise in flu cases, which are currently three times higher than at the same point last year.
The NHS is responding to an unusually early flu wave, more than a month before the typical season onset. This follows Australia’s largest recorded flu season, which often signals what to expect in England.
Weekly data reveals that over 13 million flu vaccines have been administered nationwide since the campaign began (13,299,775). Efforts to protect vulnerable groups include:
“Eligible adults must get their jab as soon as possible to stop the early wave of flu hitting the NHS more than a month earlier this year,” NHS England Representatives.
The collective effort aims to reduce the pressure on healthcare services during what could be a particularly fierce flu season.
The NHS is urgently expanding flu vaccine access to protect more people ahead of an early and severe flu season, learning from last year’s surge and Australia’s historic outbreak.
