Experts warn thousands could die from flu this winter as the UK prepares for a severe flu season. NHS England announced that 2.4 million vaccination appointments will be available to book starting next week.
Data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) highlights a rise in flu-related deaths over recent seasons. In winter 2024-2025, 7,757 deaths were recorded compared to 3,555 the previous year, although this remains below the peak of 15,867 deaths in 2022-2023.
Australia, viewed as a predictor for the UK’s flu trends, recently experienced the largest flu season in its history, signaling potential challenges ahead.
NHS England stated that the 2.4 million available vaccination slots are sufficient to cover entire regions like Greater Manchester or even countries such as Botswana. Health leaders strongly encouraged the public to book their flu jab to reduce deaths and help relieve hospital strain during winter.
“No doubt this winter will be one of the toughest our staff have ever faced,” said Sir Jim Mackey, NHS chief executive.
“Since stepping into this role, the thought of a long, drawn-out flu season has kept me awake at night.”
The NHS is urgently promoting flu vaccinations to combat an expected severe flu season that could cause thousands of deaths and significant healthcare pressure.
