Substitute Jae-Sung Lee scored deep into added time as Mainz overturned a deficit to beat Fiorentina 2-1, extending their winning streak to three matches in this season's UEFA Conference League.
After two 1-0 wins over Omonia Nicosia and Zrinjski Mostar, Mainz started well but fell behind unexpectedly. A mistake by Danny Costa allowed Simon Sohm to score with an accurate finish from the edge of the box.
Robin Zentner denied Roberto Piccoli from doubling Fiorentina's lead, and Kacper Potulski made a key challenge to block Piccoli just before halftime. Early in the second half, Piccoli missed a good chance.
“Less than three minutes after coming on as a substitute, Benedikt Hollerbach expertly finished a fine team move to level the score.”
Fiorentina had opportunities too, with Moise Kean heading over a clear chance. However, Mainz were fortunate when Lee converted a header from fellow substitute Kaishu Sano's cross in the fifth minute of stoppage time to secure victory.
Mainz will face Romania's Universitatea Craiova in their next European match on 27 November.
“Mainz’s comeback victory highlights their resilience and marks a perfect start in the UEFA Conference League group stage.”
