Court refuses to block Teamsters pickets at Sobeys’ Calgary stores

A Calgary judge has turned down Sobeys Capital Inc.’s request to prevent striking Teamsters from picketing at its stores across the city. The workers are employed at Sobeys’ Rocky View County distribution hub and a refrigerated warehouse in southeast Calgary.

In written reasons released in November, Justice Feasby of the Court of King’s Bench refused to suspend a ruling by the Alberta Labour Relations Board. That decision allows Teamsters Local 987 to continue picketing at Sobeys-owned stores in Calgary during an ongoing strike and lockout involving 251 warehouse and delivery employees.

Feasby’s ruling addressed the labour board’s decision from October 15, 2025 (2025 ALRB 126), which determined that Sobeys’ Calgary outlets qualify as legitimate “places of work” for the striking and locked-out employees.

The court order permits picketing only at company-owned stores, while franchised locations remain excluded under the board’s decision.

Author’s Summary

The Alberta court upheld strikers’ rights to picket at Sobeys’ Calgary stores, confirming these outlets are valid workplaces for the labour dispute.
