Zombies often return from the grave, but this won't be the case for Shaun of the Dead. Edgar Wright's film celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, yet fans hoping for a sequel will be disappointed.
While promoting his new movie The Running Man, Wright told Polygon that he and his longtime collaborator Simon Pegg do not feel there is enough creative energy left to continue Shaun's story.
“They don’t really earn their keep because all the story has been told in the first movie. [...] Shaun goes from being a kind of sad sack to being a hero by the end of the movie. So it’s very difficult to start the next movie when there’s no obvious arc.”
Wright’s career shows he rarely pursues sequels—in fact, his Cornetto trilogy and, arguably, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off are his only exceptions. However, zombie franchises are no strangers to follow-ups. For example, The Walking Dead spawned multiple series, and Zombieland grew into a mini-franchise with a sequel and a TV spin-off in 2019.
Furthermore, the trend of surprise sequels appearing many years later, especially from studios like Disney, has become quite common.
Edgar Wright confirms there will be no sequel to Shaun of the Dead, as the original story concluded fully and future installments lack a clear direction.
