The Toronto Maple Leafs have suspended center David Kampf after he left their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. Kampf stepped away from the Marlies due to his dissatisfaction with playing in the AHL, believing he belongs in the NHL.
He is currently exploring options to return to the NHL, either through a trade or by terminating his contract.
“The situation is expected to be resolved soon,” according to a report by PuckPedia, which likened Kampf’s potential contract termination to Brandon Saad’s move from the St. Louis Blues to the Vegas Golden Knights last season.
Kampf was assigned to the AHL after failing to secure a spot on the Maple Leafs' roster during training camp. This happened despite an early injury to center Scott Laughton, which might have opened a place on the depth chart. Kampf was placed on waivers before the season started and cleared, indicating his contract might be discouraging interest from other teams.
His situation seems influenced by Leafs head coach Craig Berube’s apparent doubts about Kampf’s fit for the NHL squad, especially after falling out of favor during the playoffs. Kampf is originally from Chomutov, Czech Republic.
David Kampf’s efforts to leave the AHL and rejoin the NHL have led to his suspension, with several routes being considered to resolve the impasse between him and the Maple Leafs.
