Soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian kicks off East Coast, Canada tour

Soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian Launches East Coast Canada Tour

New York — Renowned soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian begins her East Coast and Canada tour with an inventive program in New York City this November. Her concert series, titled “Ancestral Songs, Prayers and Lullabies,” celebrates the Armenian musical heritage shaped by Gomidas and continued by his students Parsegh Ganatchian and Mihran Toumajan.

Speaking with Lisa Terrizzi from the Friends of Armenian Cultural Society, the organizer of the Boston concert, Bayrakdarian reflected on her musical path — from a young choir singer to an internationally acclaimed performer — and her dedication to exploring and sharing Armenian sacred and folk traditions.

Interview Excerpts

Lisa Terrizzi (L.T.): Did you grow up in a musical family, and what led you to focus on singing?

Isabel Bayrakdarian (I.B.): My first and enduring love is Armenian sacred music. Singing and uncovering our ancient hymns has been both a spiritual and artistic journey, leading me to understand myself and my faith more deeply. I grew up playing piano and singing in our Armenian church choir in Lebanon. Later, as a teenager in Canada, I began voice lessons simply to communicate with God through confident, heartfelt singing made possible by proper technique.

The program showcases Bayrakdarian’s mission to revive and reinterpret Armenian musical treasures, blending prayerful depth with emotional authenticity. Audiences can expect a fusion of classical technique and deeply personal expression.
