Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was confirmed on Thursday as the leader of the right-wing Likud Party, positioning him to compete in Israel’s next legislative elections scheduled for October.
According to Israeli Channel 14, Netanyahu was re-elected without opposition during a session of the party’s Election and Oversight Committee held in Tel Aviv.
Under the party’s bylaws, a candidate is automatically elected when only one nomination is submitted, eliminating the need for a vote.
Netanyahu has headed several Israeli governments since he first took office in 1996. His re-election as party leader underscores his determination to seek another term despite ongoing corruption cases. Under Israeli law, he is not required to step down unless found guilty by the Supreme Court.
