What Building My First Dashboard Taught Me About Data Storytelling

Why Clarity Matters More Than Complexity

Have you ever created something that looked impressive but failed to communicate a clear message? One Saturday afternoon, I decided to build a dashboard to make sense of my dataset, thinking it was a natural next step in my data science skills.

After watching many YouTube tutorials, I imagined a "good" dashboard as having a neat layout with some filters on the side. I designed its structure and placed various components, but when it was complete, something didn’t feel right.

"I walked across the room and studied it from different angles. After a few long looks, I couldn’t explain what story the dashboard was actually telling."

It looked okay for a first try, but viewing it felt like listening to a crowd talking all at once with no clear focus. I had included diverse chart types—bar charts, pie charts, and line graphs—each competing for attention on the same screen.

Each chart was interesting on its own but together they failed to form a coherent message.

"If my own dashboard couldn’t connect with me, how could I expect it to connect with anyone else?"

Lessons on Effective Data Storytelling

Ultimately, simplicity and focus make data stories more relatable and easier to grasp.

Author’s summary: Creating my first dashboard taught me that clear, focused storytelling surpasses complex visuals, ensuring data truly connects with its audience.
