The California Policy Lab, together with the Committee on the Revision of the Penal Code, has introduced the California Prison Population Data Dashboards, an innovative public tool that offers interactive access to ten years of data on the state's prison population.
The dashboards present detailed information categorized by race, gender, age, offense type, and county of conviction, allowing users to explore diverse aspects of the prison population over the past decade.
Michael Romano, chairperson of the Committee on the Revision of the Penal Code, highlighted the importance of this resource:
“For the first time, lawyers, policy-makers, and the general public can see detailed information about who goes to prison, for which crimes, for how long, and from which counties. That creates a much more granular level of detail than was historically available to the public.”
This initiative results from extensive research efforts aimed at enhancing transparency and accessibility of criminal justice data.
The tool is publicly accessible via www.californiaprisondata.org.
“...a much more granular level of detail than was historically available to the public.”
Author’s summary: The new interactive dashboards offer unprecedented detailed insights into California’s prison system, advancing transparency for policymakers and the public alike.
