DA’s Typhoid Fearmongering is Dishonest and Reckless

The ActionSA chairperson has criticized the Democratic Alliance (DA) for spreading misinformation about the City of Tshwane's response to reported typhoid cases. According to ActionSA, the DA’s statements contain inaccuracies, political manipulation, and intentional panic-inducing claims that mislead residents who deserve clear facts.

Typhoid Cases in Tshwane District

As of 31 October 2025, Tshwane District has documented 48 confirmed laboratory cases of enteric fever (typhoid) since 1 January 2025. Most cases are concentrated in Hammanskraal and Bronkhorstspruit. This number is higher compared to 35 cases reported during the same period last year, reflecting a typical seasonal rise that happens annually in the warmer months.

No new typhoid cases have been detected since the last epidemiological week of October (20–26 October 2025).

Water Safety and Testing

Contrary to the DA’s assertions, the typhoid cases are not connected, and no Salmonella Typhi bacteria have been found in any samples from municipal or tanker-supplied water. Daily routine tests are conducted across Tshwane’s water network and by independent laboratories.

All water quality tests consistently confirm that Tshwane’s treated water meets the South African National Standard (SANS 241) for drinking water.
Summary

ActionSA condemns the DA for reckless fearmongering about typhoid, emphasizing that water quality remains safe and the reported cases follow normal seasonal patterns.

Author's summary: ActionSA highlights that the DA’s typhoid claims are misleading, affirming Tshwane’s water safety and normal seasonal disease trends without linked outbreaks.
