Harvard Native American Program Marks 55th Anniversary
Harvard University has a long-standing commitment to educating Indigenous students, dating back to its inception.
The Harvard University Native American Program is proposing a new headquarters on Mount Auburn Street and is symbolized by a drum featuring an Indigenous turtle design with the Harvard seal.
The college’s charter of 1650 states that the purpose of its founding is “the education of the English & Indian Youth of this Country in knowledge: and godlines[s].”
Historically, the "Indian College" stood on the site now occupied by Matthews Hall from 1655 to 1698, with Caleb Cheeshahteaumuck of the Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah being the first graduate in 1665.
