Former Labor senator and influential political commentator Graham Richardson has passed away at the age of 76. The longtime Labor powerbroker died early Saturday morning from complications related to influenza and pneumonia.
Richardson’s death occurred around 3:50 a.m., only days after his teenage son Darcy completed his final HSC exam. Before passing, he had told his wife Amanda that he intended to live long enough to see his son finish his studies.
"Darcy and Amanda have asked me to share the news with everyone that, sadly, Richo has passed away in the early hours of this morning," said 2GB radio host Ben Fordham while announcing the news.
Fordham added that Richardson had recently battled influenza and pneumonia and had been on dialysis to improve his blood health. His death followed decades of health struggles, including a cancer diagnosis in 1999 and major surgery in 2016 to remove his bowel.
