Bonners Ferry — Bryant Brown, a former employee of the Boundary County jail, faces an aggravated battery charge for allegedly assaulting an inmate in January 2023. Charges were filed in September, with a preliminary hearing set for November 17 at the Boundary County Courthouse.
Brown, 37, had two earlier hearings canceled for undisclosed reasons. A bond of $50,000 was posted, but he has not yet entered a plea.
The January 3, 2023 incident involved an inmate detained by Bonners Ferry Police Department who was wanted on a misdemeanor warrant from Kootenai County. According to a probable cause affidavit by Sheriff's Detective Brandon Blackmore, the intoxicated inmate was verbally abusive and uncooperative toward jail staff.
The affidavit states that after a heated verbal exchange with Brown, the inmate was led to a holding cell where Brown allegedly pushed him against a glass window and struck him with a fist. This caused the inmate's head to hit a brick wall. The inmate reportedly tried to block the strikes by grabbing Brown’s arms but did not resist otherwise.
According to the affidavit, "Brown then grabbed the man’s throat with both hands and slammed his head into the brick wall."
The Herald does not disclose victim names in criminal reports.
