Ita, 83, remains optimistic despite facing uncertainty after undergoing back surgery in 2021. Soon after the operation, she noticed symptoms that eventually led to a diagnosis of isolated gait disorder.
Since the surgery, Ita has not been able to walk properly and now uses a wheelchair. She acknowledges her dependence on others for mobility and views this as an adjustment to her life.
"I'm dependent on other people to help me get around and that's one of the adjustments."
Doctors are unsure if her back surgery caused the condition or if it might worsen over time.
Instead of focusing on the difficulties, Ita emphasizes the benefits such as relief from back pain. She chooses to take control rather than feel sorry for herself.
"I can either feel sorry for myself and do nothing, or I can take control of my life, as I always have."
Despite her determination, she expresses frustration about the limited funding for research into her illness.
"Life is full of detours."
She recently completed her twelfth book, Unapologetically Ita, her second memoir and the first without the pressure of a full-time job. Writing has been a joyful experience for her.
"It was a relief to write a book and discover how much fun it is when you don't have to keep leaving it to go back to the job you do."
Ita’s story reflects resilience and the power of focusing on positivity amidst health challenges.
Summary: Ita copes with a life-changing condition by embracing positivity, adapting to new realities, and finding joy in writing despite uncertainties and challenges.
