The episode opened with a New York City mayoral debate. Miles Teller portrayed Andrew Cuomo, Ramy Youssef appeared as Zohran Mamdami, and Shane Gillis took on Curtis Sliwa. It turned out to be one of the funniest cold opens of the season and among Gillis’s finest moments on SNL. The only downside was the predictable cameo by James Austin Johnson’s Trump — though he delivered a memorable line:
“I have good brain. I took a cognitive test and I did so well that they immediately gave me an MRI.”
The sketch earned a solid 7 out of 10. Youssef’s strong performance hopefully signals more appearances to come.
The monologue was decent, marked by Teller’s genuine energy. After losing his home in the Pallisades fire, he came across as a bit humbler. Interestingly, he didn’t mention his upcoming movie Eternity, set for release later this month. (Score: 5 out of 10)
The recurring game show concept returned with a segment where hungover contestants try to recall their previous night’s actions. While moderately entertaining, the sketch lacked the twist and creativity that might have elevated it beyond mediocrity. (Score: 5 out of 10)
Teller doubled up to play both Property Brothers, assisting the White House with a renovation project. The humor felt a bit forced and even dour, leaning more on irony than laughs. (Score: 6 out of 10)
This quick bit had more charm than expected. It managed to be unexpectedly funny and played off the absurdity of its premise effectively.
A lively SNL episode where Shane Gillis surprisingly shines, while Miles Teller delivers a modest hosting turn marked by sincerity and uneven sketches.
