Dave Doeren has been the head coach at NC State for 13 years, during which the football program has consistently maintained solid but not spectacular performance levels. Since taking the job in 2013, the Wolfpack have achieved between seven and nine wins in every season from 2014 to 2023, except for one, but have never surpassed nine wins.
Each nine-win season coincided with an AP Top 25 ranking, though the team has never quite made it to the ACC Championship game, finishing just one game short on multiple occasions. Despite this consistent performance, notable programs have often opted for change when results plateau, as seen in other coaching moves across college football.
Despite this precedent, Doeren remains committed and optimistic:
"I'm having a blast," Doeren told ESPN's Inside ACCess podcast. "I have four years left on my contract, I fully expect to coach in. So unless they kick me out of here, I'm going to keep coming to work and doing everything I can to help NC State. There's meat on the bone for me, personally."
Doeren rejects any notion of retirement or resignation, showing determination to continue leading the program forward.
Dave Doeren dismisses retirement rumors, expressing strong commitment to continue coaching NC State despite steady but unspectacular results.
