The Forsytes, a new Channel 5 period drama, premiered on Monday, October 20. The series offers a fresh take on John Galsworthy’s classic Forsyte Saga novels and features an impressive ensemble cast.
The adaptation was written by screenwriter Debbie Horsfield, known for her work on Poldark. The cast includes Eleanor Tomlinson from Poldark, Susan Hampshire—who originally appeared in the 1967 version of The Forsyte Saga—Millie Gibson from Coronation Street, Joshua Orpin from Home and Away, Tuppence Middleton of Downton Abbey, Stephen Moyer from True Blood, Jack Davenport, and Tom Durant Pritchard from The Crown.
Family stability is threatened by two chance encounters for rival cousins, Jolyon and Soames, throwing their previously steady lives into disarray. Married Jolyon contends with the reappearance of his former lover, Louisa, a lady’s maid-turned-dressmaker, while daughter June falls for a penniless architect. Soames, meanwhile, is enchanted by the beautiful and free-spirited dancer Irene. All must decide whether to be ruled by the head or the heart.
The Forsytes premiered on Monday, October 20, at 9 p.m. Two episodes have aired, and fans eagerly await the next installment. The first episode opens a decade after Jolyon’s marriage to Frances, a favorite of high society, with the Forsyte family preparing to mark their daughter June’s 18th birthday and debut into society.
A lavish new adaptation of John Galsworthy’s Forsyte Saga brings love, rivalry, and high-society drama to Channel 5’s autumn lineup.
