Rachel Homan defeated Kaitlyn Lawes 8-3 Thursday night at the KIOTI GSOC Tahoe, extending her team's winning streak to 30 consecutive games against Canadian rivals.
Homan and her Ottawa-based team continue to discover new ways to maintain their edge over fellow Canadian squads. This victory marked their 30th straight win against Canadian opponents and improved their record to 80-2 since the start of the 2023-24 season.
In the third end, Homan seized a critical break by stealing two points when Lawes’s shot came up light and tight. Later, in the seventh end, Homan took a risky shot to score a deuce by driving Lawes’s stone out of the house; the stone clipped a rock outside the scoring rings, which then bumped another Homan stone into position, securing two points.
“Yeah, getting two there was huge,” said Sarah Wilkes, lead stone thrower for Team Homan. “Going into that end, we kind of talked about what was ideal. Being forced was probably the least ideal out of all the situations. Definitely got a little lucky with the way we got the two, but it was a huge momentum swing for sure.”
The Tahoe Blue Event Center, located on the Nevada side of the border, is a place where such daring plays often occur.
Kaitlyn Lawes entered the final end holding the hammer but was trailing 6-3. She needed a remarkable shot to change the outcome.
Author's summary: Rachel Homan’s team extended their impressive Canadian winning streak to 30 games with a bold and strategic victory over Kaitlyn Lawes at the KIOTI GSOC Tahoe.
