Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has signed a framework agreement with Siemens Mobility to supply its Signaling X digital interlocking technology. This agreement was announced on November 5 and is part of SBB’s SFr1.4 billion digital interlocking framework contract announced earlier on October 22. The contract includes work packages awarded to Hitachi Rail, Siemens, and Stadler.
Siemens will deploy digital interlockings, comprising both hardware and software, to replace or modernize around 500 interlockings across the Swiss railway network. Approximately 80% of the existing equipment will be replaced during the next 20 years. The contract also covers system development, training, support services, and 25 years of maintenance.
Orders for individual interlockings will be placed continuously over the contract period. The first interlockings are expected to be commissioned in 2029.
“At the heart of this transformation are virtual interlocking systems. With Signaling X, interlocking logic is intelligently shifted to central data centres, digitalising rail operations from the ground up.”
Siemens’ technology marks a major step in modernizing Swiss rail infrastructure through digital innovation and centralized control.
Summary: Swiss Federal Railways partners with Siemens to modernize 500 interlockings using Signaling X, enabling centralized and digital rail operations with long-term support and maintenance.
