Josh Hutcherson joined Rachel Sennott’s HBO comedy “I Love LA” later than usual, stepping in during a recast after the pilot was filmed. Despite the late start, he played a key role in developing his character, Dylan, the long-term live-in partner of Sennott's Maia, alongside Rachel Sennott and co-showrunner Emma Barrie.
Hutcherson explained their collective approach to Dylan’s personality:
“We very quickly all got on the same page, which was we didn’t want Dylan to just be the square, the boring, nothing guy. We wanted to find some textures to him that felt funny and dynamic and different, rather than something that we’ve seen before.”
As they developed Dylan's role, Hutcherson, Sennott, and Barrie explored the character beyond the initial portrayal by Miles Robbins in the pilot. They focused on understanding Dylan's core traits, desires, and his relationship with Maia, allowing the character to evolve beyond the script.
Author's summary: Josh Hutcherson’s collaborative approach turned Dylan into a multi-dimensional character, avoiding clichés and adding humor and depth to “I Love LA.”
