Typhoon Fung-wong moved away from the northwestern Philippines on Monday after causing severe floods, landslides, and power outages. The storm resulted in at least eight deaths and displaced over 1.4 million people.
The typhoon is forecast to continue northwest toward Taiwan. Fung-wong struck northeastern Aurora province Sunday night as a super typhoon, with sustained winds reaching 185 kph (115 mph) and gusts up to 230 kph (143 mph).
As it crossed mountainous northern provinces and agricultural plains, the 1,800-kilometer-wide storm weakened before moving near La Union province and heading toward the South China Sea.
Fung-wong hit while the country was still recovering from Typhoon Kalmaegi, which caused at least 224 deaths in central provinces on November 4 and later killed five people in Vietnam.
