First real cold snap hits Houston, but 80s return by midweek.

First Real Cold Snap Hits Houston

Temperatures dropped below average early in the week, bringing a noticeable chill to Houston and Southeast Texas.

Cold Front Aftermath

Stepping outside, the Arctic blast is immediately apparent. This morning started cold, with temperatures in the 30s and 40s. Today's high reached only 58°, which is 16° below normal.

Strong winds are drying the atmosphere, increasing fire danger across the region. The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for all of Southeast Texas through Monday evening.

Drought Conditions

As of Thursday, over 80% of Southeast Texas remains in drought, with some western counties facing extreme drought conditions. Combined with gusty winds and dry air, there is a heightened wildfire risk.

Weather Outlook

Cold air will linger Tuesday morning with temperatures again in the 30s, but by the afternoon, warmth returns, reaching the 70s. This cold snap is brief; by midweek, temperatures are expected to climb back near 80 degrees.

Rain chances are not expected to return until the weekend, and even then, precipitation will likely be insufficient to end the drought.
