Emmy Award-winning and Tony Award-nominated performer Eddie Izzard returns to the stage with a remarkable one-person rendition of The Tragedy of Hamlet. The show will run from June 10 to 21, 2026, at the Sydney Opera House, following sold-out seasons in both the US and UK.
In the spirit of the original Shakespearean performances, Eddie will present the play on a bare stage, focusing purely on storytelling and the power of Shakespeare’s text. The production has been adapted by Mark Izzard and directed by Selina Cadell. Eddie will portray all 23 characters in the timeless tragedy.
"I have always gravitated towards playing complex and demanding characters. This production is for everyone – a timeless drama with an accidental hero. Selina, Mark and I want audiences to see and hear an accessible, touching, scary and dramatic Hamlet."
"This is a rare opportunity for Sydney to experience Eddie’s dramatic flair. Her one-person rendering of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy offers audiences an intimate, engrossing performance. This is Eddie Izzard and Hamlet as you’ve never seen them before."
– Harry Prouse, Acting Head of Contemporary Performance, Sydney Opera House
This is Eddie’s second solo production following the highly praised and sold-out run of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, which earned rave reviews in New York and London.
Eddie Izzard’s minimalist one-person Hamlet brings Shakespeare’s classic to life with compelling storytelling, embodying all characters with emotional depth and dramatic intensity.
