Morocco’s Blue Future: How Aquaculture Can Power Growth and Jobs

Morocco’s aquaculture sector shows great potential, with the current production of 3,600 tons representing only a small share of what the country can accomplish. Leveraging its long coastline and rich marine ecosystems, Morocco is focusing on marine aquaculture as a key driver for growth, innovation, and employment.

Ambitious Growth Targets

With ongoing public and private investments, Morocco aims to boost aquaculture production to 300,000 tons and create 30,000 jobs within the next ten years. The sector already includes a variety of species such as fish, clams, mussels, oysters, seaweed, and shrimp, while new prospects are emerging in seaweed farming and shellfish cultivation.

Supporting Reforms and Infrastructure

The country has established a modern regulatory framework and identified optimal zones for aquaculture development, enhancing its capacity for sustainable growth. Strengthened trade connections are also opening global seafood markets to Moroccan producers.

Current Expansion

Morocco’s aquaculture base is growing steadily. There are now 322 licensed farms targeting an annual output exceeding 124,000 tons. Domestic seafood consumption is rising, supported by population growth and increasing awareness of seafood’s health benefits.

“With its extensive coastline, rich marine ecosystems, and a growing global appetite for sustainable seafood, the Kingdom is turning to marine aquaculture as a new engine for growth, innovation and jobs.”

Author’s summary: Morocco is rapidly developing its aquaculture sector, aiming to transform its rich marine assets into significant production and employment opportunities within the next decade.
