Balmain has appointed Antonin Tron, founder of the Paris-based brand Atlein, as its new creative director. He succeeds Olivier Rousteing, who left the Mayhoola-backed French fashion house last week after fourteen years of leadership.
This change reflects a broader wave of creative shifts within Europe’s luxury fashion houses during a period of declining consumer demand. Tron, acknowledged for his refined draping techniques and modern craftsmanship, will put his own label Atlein on hold to focus fully on Balmain.
According to the company, Tron’s first collection for the 80-year-old fashion house will be presented in March in Paris.
“Antonin’s approach to design, rooted in the art of draping and the physicality of fabric, marks a continuation of Pierre Balmain’s foundational belief that ‘dressmaking is the architecture of movement,’ said Balmain chief executive Matteo Sgarbossa.
“Like Balmain, Antonin sees fashion as a spatial art, building around the human form with precision and emotion. Antonin will build on the House’s heritage of creativity, craftsmanship, elegance, and profound human values.”
Rousteing, who made history in 2011 as the first Black creative director at a major European fashion house, leaves behind a strong legacy that Tron is set to expand upon.
Antonin Tron takes over as Balmain’s creative director, succeeding Olivier Rousteing, with plans to debut his first collection in March and carry forward the house’s legacy of elegance and innovation.
