On the evening of Black Friday in 2025, a shooting at the Westfield Valley Fair Mall in Santa Clara, California, injured three people. The victims included one adult male, one adult female, and a 16-year-old girl, all of whom sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities have described the incident as isolated and confirmed it was not an active shooter situation.
The shooting occurred around 5:40 p.m. on the second floor near Macy's, reportedly following an argument between two individuals. The suspected shooter fled the mall immediately after the incident, which caused panic and evacuation among shoppers. Videos from the scene show chaotic evacuation, with shoppers and mall employees sheltering in place and some evacuating with their hands raised. Broken glass from a bullet that went through a window was also reported.
San Jose police are actively reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to identify and locate the suspect. Police have asked anyone with information or video to come forward. The mall was placed on lockdown during the investigation and was closed until further notice, reopening the following day at noon. San Jose officials emphasized that the incident should not deter people from enjoying their holiday shopping.
Westfield Valley Fair is a large shopping center spanning parts of both San Jose and Santa Clara, with over 2.2 million square feet of retail space and more than 200 stores. The mall was closed temporarily due to the shooting, which disrupted the busy Black Friday shopping period.
"This was not targeted at unsuspecting shoppers; something occurred between two individuals that prompted the shooting," said Sgt. Jorge Garibay of the San Jose Police Department.
The Westfield Valley Fair Mall shooting was a contained, isolated event originating from a dispute between individuals, leading to injuries but no ongoing threat, with swift police action ensuring public safety.
