Last year, Minnesota reported 70 measles cases, but this year the number has risen to 20, with two new cases confirmed in unvaccinated children.
According to the Minnesota Department of Health, 15 of the 20 cases were from exposures within the United States, 4 were imported cases, and 1 case has an unknown exposure. The majority of cases, 18 out of 20, have been in children.
The two newly reported cases involve unvaccinated children in Ramsey and Hennepin counties, and are believed to have contracted measles from an unvaccinated adult.
In related news, a large ongoing measles outbreak in Mexico has resulted in 22 deaths, with 4,879 confirmed cases reported through October 11, mostly in Chihuahua state.
