The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, is about to undergo significant changes to its eligibility, work requirements, and cost coverage.

According to economists, programs like SNAP are considered "automatic stabilizers" that help individuals cover necessary costs during difficult economic times. Other examples of such programs include unemployment insurance and Medicaid.

Grocery stores see less demand, and so they have to do things like, you know, lay off a bag boy — and so those families, their incomes go down at the same time

Diane Schanzenbach of Georgetown and Brookings notes that SNAP helps families in need, which in turn supports local businesses and jobs. For instance, a family that receives SNAP benefits can continue to buy groceries, allowing the grocery store to maintain its staff, including baggers.
