Gov. Josh Stein announced that over $6.5 billion in medical debt has been relieved for more than 2.5 million North Carolinians as part of the state's medical debt mitigation program.
“They’d rather take a loss and just go home to sit and let their back heal or however they’re going to do it,”said Yolanda Sheppard, a senior citizen in Greenville, highlighting the fear of debt that prevents some from seeking care.
Despite this progress, uncertainty surrounds Medicaid due to potential cuts, including a proposed 15 percent cut to Medicaid spending by President Trump's administration.
The secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services notes that these cuts will not immediately impact the debt relief program.
