The St Patricks Plains wind project in Tasmania has experienced its fifth delay in awaiting a decision under the federal Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act.
The project, initially designed for 67 turbines, has been scaled back to 47 turbines with a capacity of 291 megawatts (MW). It is proposed for a site south-east of Milena and 25km north of Bothwell in Tasmania’s Central Highlands.
A decision on whether the project requires approval under the EPBC Act was initially expected in May, but has been delayed multiple times, with the new deadline set for November 28. Both the previous delay and the current one were requested by the project developer, Ark Energy, according to a government spokesperson.
Ark Energy acquired the project in 2022 from Epuron, adding to the already lengthy delays in the EPBC process, which began in 2019 when the project was first deemed to require federal supervision.
