Micro-dramas, 90-minute films broken down into one-minute episodes, have become a significant phenomenon in China, with a market size of $7bn annually, surpassing the domestic box office.
These episodes are made available online, with the first few episodes offered for free before viewers are required to pay, up to $30 per drama, to watch the rest through an app.
"The micro-drama market in China pulls in $7bn annually. It's already bigger than their domestic box office," said Adrienne Lahens, former TikTok exec and current CEO of Infinite Studios.
