As Tanzania's national elections approach, the country is becoming increasingly repressive under President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Hassan, who is seeking re-election in October 2025, is adopting tactics similar to those of her predecessor, John Pombe Magufuli, who banned media, censored journalists, and rigged elections before his death in 2021.
Hassan has even surpassed Magufuli in autocratic measures, putting her chief opponent, Tundu Lissu, on trial for treason, a threshold not breached since Tanzania's transition to multipartyism in 1992.
President Samia Hassan, who is seeking re-election this month, increasingly resembles her predecessor John Magufuli.
Author's summary: Tanzania's President Hassan is becoming increasingly repressive.
