Adequate ventilation systems are crucial in protecting vulnerable groups in healthcare facilities against viruses like COVID-19.
The P3Venti research programme, coordinated by TNO, has significantly advanced our understanding of airborne viruses and ventilation systems, providing practical tools for informed decision-making in future pandemics.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, we implemented numerous measures despite still knowing little about how the virus behaved,”
says Roberto Traversari, senior advisor and researcher at TNO, who is the scientific lead on the Programme for Pandemic Preparedness and Ventilation (P3Venti), funded by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.
Based on the insights gained, seven recommendations have been formulated to enhance national preparedness for pandemics.
Author's summary: Ventilation is key to pandemic preparedness.
