Dozens of Roberts Bakery workers have been left without their redundancy packages and unpaid for work already done after the company was bought out by a billionaire food magnate.
In July, Frank Roberts & Sons, the parent company of the bakery, announced that 250 workers would be entering a compulsory redundancy consultation period. Of these, 86 workers were deemed surplus to requirements and their contractual notice periods were initiated.
The length of the notice periods varied depending on the worker's length of service to the 138-year-old company. Some workers were expecting to finish as early as next week, while others were expecting to remain employed until December 12.
The workers have been "shafted" by the rescue deal, leaving them without pay and redundancy packages.
